Description

Made in Portugal

The Japan Dry Selvage. Made from a mid- to -heavy weight denim fabric developed exclusively for Livid  by the renowned Japanese fabric mill, Kurabo. This top of the line denim is made out of 100% sanforized cotton and is unwashed and completely untreated. Perfect start for your brand new dry denim project and great for the environment!

The Japan Dry Selvage is made – as all our denim fabrics - with a dyeing technique called rope dye. A great attribute if you want the jeans of your choice to fade and become more and more unique with wear. When rope dyeing denim yarns the white core of the cotton yarn remains untouched during the dyeing process. With friction and wear as the layers and layers of indigo are worn off the surface of the fabric, the un-dyed core of the cotton yarn will appear, slowly leaving beautiful contrast fading to the surface. Ever tried it yourself? A definite essential for any denim enthusiast!

Dry – or wet bleed
These particular jeans have not been pre-washed. Until the jeans have seen a proper wash or two, the indigo colour may transfer onto bags, furniture or other pieces of clothing. Indigo stains on clothing are easily removed in a normal wash, but beware of hard to wash items you are in regular touch with, as light sofas or light leather seats.

Washing raw denim
Some people prefer raw denim because of its even and dark colour. Others, and many denim enthusiasts, choose raw denim for its potential to evolve a strong personal wear pattern, or fades, over time. How you should treat and wash your jeans depend on how you wish your jeans to evolve. We recommend the following:

Keep the colour even
All raw denim will fade and become lighter over time, but for a more even look we recommend to wash the jeans early. This will actually also prolong the life of the jeans. Wait till the jeans have stretched out and become comfortable, a week or two of daily wear. Then follow the instructions below for machine wash.

Build fades
Raw denim is a blank canvas, and the more you wear them, the bigger imprint you will leave on your jeans. The longer you wait with your first wash, the higher contrast you will achieve in your personal wear patterns.

One drawback of wearing dry denim jeans without washing over a very long period, is that they will wear out quicker than if they had been washed. If you wish to build fades and strong contrasting wear patterns, but also wish to extend the life of the jean, we recommend giving your jeans a cold soak after you've stretched them out by wearing them a week or two. A cold soak will soften up the jeans by removing starch left on the cotton from the weaving process, it will also make seams stronger by letting the needle holes relax. This will make the jeans more resistant to wearing out over time. Follow the instructions below for a soak.

Soak
Turn your jeans inside-out and submerge them completely in cold or lukewarm water for about an hour. This can be done in a bathtub, or in any other form of tub or even a bucket. Hang them up to drip dry, preferably over a tub, and beware that the drips will be indigo coloured.

Machine wash
When it is time to wash your jeans. Turn it inside out and machine wash at 30 degrees celsius for minimal shrinkage and wear. Wash with similar colours without any fabric softener, and be sure to take them out of the machine quickly after the programme has ended. Do not tumble dry, and be sure to stretch inseams while damp to maintain preferred length. May shrink up to 3% depending on how many degrees.

Repair your jeans
After months of wear your jeans will look fantastic but with time it may have acquired wear & tears like crotch blow outs and butt rips. No worries! Contact a local tailor and get it repaired. Not only will you give more character and life to your jeans. – You’ll also support your local tailor. If you have none, we will gladly do the first repair on old Livids free of charge. Please read our Repair Service & Repair Policy for more information.

Deposit your jeans
There could be a lot of life left in an old and worn out pair of jeans. Even though it can no longer be used for wear, it can be reused for other functions. As a produced, we have a responsibility to ensure a sustainable end-of-life for our products. When your jeans are no longer wearable or repairable, deposit your jeans for 150 NOK store credit at one of our flagship stores, and we will give it new life! Read more about our SAVED initiative.
