Made in Germany
The casual Birkenstock Kyoto takes its inspiration from the classic Zürich model and stands out with its compact, modern design and perfectly velcro-adjustable straps. This offers optimum grip and is complemented by two decorative rivets. The upper is made from especially soft suede which hugs the foot like a second skin combined with high-quality nubuck leather.
This style features Birkenstock's Soft Footbed, a contoured cork footbed that conforms to the shape of your foot and features pronounced arch support, a deep heel cup and roomy toe box. En extra layer of super soft foam provides extra cushioning. Lined with suede. Finished with a tonal EVA outsole.
How it's made
Birkenstock traces its history back to 1774 when Johann Adam Birkenstock is listed in Church Archives in Langen-Bergheim as a cobbler. It's however his great-great-grandson Konrad Birkenstock that really starts the Birkenstock business in 1896 when he begins manufacturing and selling flexible footbed insoles. 1902 saw the development of the first flexible arch-support for insertion into factory-made shoes; and in 1963, Karl Birkenstock developed these inserts into a shoe — thus producing the original prototype of the Birkenstock sandal, the Madrid sandal.
The Arizona sandal was launched in 1973, and the Boston clog in 1977. Birkenstocks first became popular during the cultural revolution among young men and hippies. They later became hugely popular in the early 90's among high school and college-aged Gen Xers, and have had a strong staying power ever since.
We don't just love Birkenstocks for their comfort, support and their practical good looks. We also appreciate the way they are made. The sandals we carry are still manufactured in Germany. Already in 1988 Birkenstock switched to environmentally friendly adhesives in production, and in 1990 when they modernised their plant, they reduced their energy consumption by 90 percent.
Love & Care
Protect your investment
Like many materials found in footwear and apparel, cork footbeds and EVA soles can be damaged by exposure to concentrated heat or extreme temperatures. Do not leave your shoes in direct sunlight for extended periods or in closed cars on hot days. Keep Birkenstock footwear away from campfires, fireplaces, and indoor radiators.
Except for specific swim shoe styles, Birkenstocks should not be immersed in water. Over saturation can compromise the integrity of the sealant materials. It can also change the look and finish of the materials. If your shoes become wet, allow them to air dry slowly, away from direct heat.
Simply clean your sandals with a clean damp cloth. If needed use a leather cleaner. Allow to dry.
Use a crepe brush to remove stains and to restore nap. For stubborn stains, try using Red Wing's cleaner kit.
To keep your sandal fresh, we recommend using The Steamery's Clothing and Shoe Mist.
Add extra protection to preserve your footwear. Saphir's Super Invulner spray waterproofs the most delicate leathers, and offers superior protection against water, stains and grease. This will protect your sandal uppers and suede footbed from water and dirt.
Birkenstocks fit true to size on most customers. Your feet should be able to move freely without your toes hitting the edge of the footbed. The Birkenstock shoebox features a handy foot measuring template.
Birkenstocks come in two widths, a narrow width and a normal width. In general we carry the narrow width for sizes 40 and below (sorted as women's sandals in our web store), and the normal width for 40 and up (sorted as men's).
