How it's made
In Summer we see a mixing of different denims in the same garment and a mixing of different panels of variously coloured cloths. Each element of each labour-intensive piece is separately cut, dyed, washed and then assembled.
Expressive Peter Max artwork is printed on the inside of the garments for the joy of the wearer. For Summer there is the ‘flower runner’ artwork and ‘smile’ repeat. Another twist is the iconic Peter Max lips symbol as a hidden badge under the collar on the denim jackets.
While the archive-inspired clothes are updated with modern fits, all unisex packaging is a direct replica of the 70s original.
Peter Max biography
Peter Max was born in Berlin in 1937 and travelled to China, Tibet, India, Israel and France before finally settling in America. He’s an artist who at an early age drew inspiration from three of his greatest interests: comic books, movies and jazz. Later, his influences were also gathered from astronomy, yoga and Eastern spirituality.
Max synthesised the “Summer of Love” into artworks from canvas to mugs. A master of Pop Art, he is also the official portrait artist for the Statue of Liberty. One of the most famous living artists, Peter Max is a pop culture icon. His bold colours, uplifting images and an uncommon artistic diversity have touched almost every phase of American culture and have inspired many generations. Peter Max has painted for six U.S. Presidents and his art is on display in Presidential Libraries and in U.S. Embassies.
His work is an indispensable guide for cultural literacy of the 1960s, and commands a solid following worldwide. In 1969, Peter Max was featured on the cover of Life and an article was dedicated to him: “Peter Max: Portrait of the Artist as a Very Rich Man”. To date, Peter Max’s work is consistently collected by the art world.
The first collaboration of Peter Max with Wrangler goes back to the early 70s and resulted in a highly desired collection of jeans, shorts and shirts best described as psychedelic and hippie. Flash forward to 2017, the collections are inspired by the 70s collaboration, but reinterpreted for the modern consumer. The packaging on the garments are an exact replica of the original.
Wrangler by Peter Max
In 2017 Wrangler takes a bold step - both in terms of reaching for the highest quality and, aesthetically, in introducing an unforgettable splash of high energy. The company unveils a new premium collection in collaboration with the celebrated artist Peter Max, master of the psychedelic print - marking both Wrangler’s 70th anniversary and the ‘Summer of Love’s 50th.
The jeans giant first collaborated with Max in the early 1970s, and, appropriately, this new, all European-made line - for both men and women - has the same boldly colourful, upbeat period feel. While the archive- inspired clothes are updated with modern fits, all unisex packaging is a direct replica of the 70s original. The anniversary collection features jeans, shorts, western shirts and jackets, printed sweats and Ts.
The Summer delivery, in May, is characterised by two stories: a mixing of different denims in the same garment and a mixing of different panels of variously coloured cloths. Each element of each labour-intensive piece is necessarily separately cut, dyed, washed and then assembled.
The Fall delivery, in August, sees a continuation of denim mixing and colour mixing, but in corduroy fabric and a winter palette. In Fall we also have a third story - combining selvedge denim and indigo herringbone with hickory striped cloth and corduroy.
Key colours in Summer include vibrant, pop shades of red, peach, green, blue and sand, while the Fall collection explores the colour range of navy, burgundy, tobacco and off-white with pieces in both deliveries lined in a fun digital print of Max’s ‘Flower Runner’ or ‘Smile’ graphic.
The Wrangler by Peter Max collection also introduces new jean fits: for men, a tapered version of the 11MWZ, a Wrangler classic, and for women a high- waisted, hip-hugging straight cut. Jackets are boxy and cut short, shorts gently flared. To mark Wrangler’s anniversary, these key denim pieces, for both men and women, also feature the company’s seven icons, including vintage patch, pocket branding and seven belt loops, each highlighted by the use of white stitching.
Look for the ‘W’ on the pocket.
